Post-Brexit Challenges for UK Jewellery Brands at European Shows

Since Brexit, UK jewellery makers like Tomasz Donocik have faced numerous challenges when showcasing their jewellery designs at European trade shows. The introduction of complex customs regulations has made participation increasingly difficult, particularly at events like Paris Fashion Week.

One major issue is the requirement for ATA carnets, temporary import documents necessary for transporting goods across borders. Exhibitors without the correct paperwork risk fines from customs officials, which can amount to 10% of the jewellery’s value—an expensive setback for smaller designers.

Additionally, UK jewellery designers struggle with France’s refusal to recognize British hallmarks, complicating the process of selling their creations. Tomasz Donocik highlights the hassle of obtaining French hallmarks and special VAT documentation, leading many to reconsider their participation in these vital international markets.

The high shipping costs to France and other European countries add another layer of difficulty, often making it economically unviable for UK designers to exhibit abroad. As the landscape for UK jewellery design shifts post-Brexit, many are left questioning whether the opportunities at these international shows are worth the increasing hurdles.
